MY MOTIV BMW

For BMW owners and enthusiasts

I think that there's something to be said for the fact that driving ability is inherited. There are so many two or three (or four?) generation racing families.

Or is it that those people who come from racing families are more inclined to be racing drivers themselves?

I think that it's all of the above. Yes, if your mother or father is a racing driver, you are going to be exposed to the racing world a lot more than if your parents are schoolteachers! I also know people who seem to be born to drive.

But I also think that good driving can be taught.

There are definitely people who are born to drive. And there are also people who will just never get it. My dad was telling me the other day about my auntie [name withheld to protect the innocent!] who is now in her nineties and who has never once been known to reverse a car! Apparently she would drive around for hours rather than reverse.

Thank you for your replies!

Talking about racing families, let's see if we can get a list. I'll start!

i agree that certain aspects of driving can be taught, but i have to say that the ability and inherent gut 'feeling' for driving has to be 'in you' from the start. there has to be a natural desire and to some extent, ability, to make a good driver. just my opinion.

I think you have a very good point, Nick. The desire to drive well has a lot to do with it. I like to be good at everything I do and that includes driving. Some people just don't care. For them, driving is just a matter of getting from point A to point B.

This is such a shame because they are missing out on a lot of fun. But in addition, they can't be as safe as people who take pride in their driving, surely?

There are some very sensible comments here. I think we all agree that driver education is important. So now what???

I think some people are just born with a natural ability which can obviously be enhanced given the right conditions. An of course some people just haven't got a clue...my grand father god rest him???
Given a licence by the military in WW2 but once a civvy wouldn't go over 60....quite annoying if you were behind him on the A1

Are good drivers born or made?
Both - Undoubtedly there is natural ability or lack of it. I have friends that frighten me to death because of their apparent lack of perception on what is going on around them, others seem alert, quick and safe. If your interested in something you take note and absorb more, than is necessary to accomplish the task. Racing drivers are not made over night, you have to learn your craft. i wonder how many race car drivers failed their test at the first attempt?

As to racing drivers (another thing again), danger is an element. If you have a certian disregard for your own skin and i would hold WRC drivers in that catogory or convince yourself that it will never happen to you (young men seem to do this quite well) then you have extra potential to do well. For me touching 50, I dont drive as fast as i did, i know it can happen to me and get increasingly worried about those other idiots out there with me in there sites.

I defo think that good drivers are born. You can train someone to be a good driver, but they still wont be as gifted that someone who is born to drive. That goes for either road drivers and race drivers.

I agree Madeira. I also think that the younger people are when they learn to drive, the better drivers they will be.
