head gasket?

Reply to This

first indication of problem was slight squeek from engine compartment like water pump bearing. it got worse, lifted bonnet quite loud from front of engine. when revved up, noise disappeared. Next morning as I started, puff of white grey smoke from exhaust when first started, noise from engine compartment no longer there. next problem appeared as when accelerating clouds of white and grey smoke billowing out of backend, lift foot off gas pedal smoke disappeared. smoke coming out of both exhausts, next problem developed as a little lumpy on tickover. and that is as it stands now.

Gordon what about temprature....
Sounds like it could be the water pump or one of the serpentile belt pulley bearings making the noise....

V8's are stronger than the straight 6

Sounds like a head gasket has blown, hence the smoke. The squeak could be a belt pulley or the water pump, but that wouldn't explain the smoke from the exhaust.

I would still tend to think the valley pan gasket is needing replaced, that would account for the smell of oil, it could also be the OSV (oil separator valve) leaking, basically a vacuum leak, hence the lumpy tick over and the whine, the valve and valley pan gasket are all related. A quick test for this is to remove the dipstick and see if the engine tone changes and air gets sucked in.

Temp normal right in the middle as usual. I lifted the bonnet and squeal came m front of engine. (Had new water pump and thermostat housimg last year, including new belts etc) If cylinder head only one bank would be blowing through exhaust unless both heads gaskets have gone, this seems improbable. Ken seems to have come up with another possibility, I am now back at home and car has just arrived, due to long journey will start checking tomorrow. Incidently there is no noise coming from engine compartment now. when revved engine sounds normal. Please keep thinking of possibilities, I really do appreciate all of you trying to come up with a solution. Do please make it a cheap solution.

Ken is the Valley pan gasket the one between the banks? You say remove the dipstick and see ifengine note changes, do you mean as the air gets sucked in. I know that when I tried to take out the dip stick I need quite a lot of Umph to get it out. But once it was,out it went in and out quite easily. (Cleaning the rod and reinserting to check oil level. Oh wow is me.

Yes the valley pan gasket is between the banks, there are also a number of seals under there. The gasket and or the seals leak and the are underneath fills with oil and water. The OSV is at the back of the engine and that can fail and cause a leak.

Ok, I will proceed very slowly. I read the attachment and have saved it. Not sure if the person was saying what he had left over, (He wrote a list of the parts) so maybe he has the gasket and seals available for me to buy. Now tomorrow, would you suggest me driving it over to Stirling a matter of 8 miles to the BMW Stealer, before I start out, I would check oil water etc, and keep revs down as much as possible. What do you think?

Yep check water and oil levels, I don't expect the car to overheat. A compression test would be a good place to start and a pressure test of the coolant system. Is there not anyone closer that would be able to look at the car?

You might want to start emptying that garage of yours, could be useful for doing any repairs. If it is the valley pan gasket the stealer will rob you blind for it! It is quite a lengthy job.

Oh I wasn't going to get the job done there, thought that I mighht get a "Possibly could be" off them. I do have a man for the job but you haven't volunteered yet. Only joking. (However if you want a paid job it is yours).

LOl we would need to confirm what it is first, then we need a secure covered area!
