Profile Information

About Me:
My name is John, and I live in Hampton, a leafy beachside suburb of Melbourne, Australia, about 15km south of the CBD. I work as an IT Architecture Manager for IBM. I spend lots of time cleaning and detailing my car, I really enjoy it and it's how I get away from the stresses of daily life. I've recently acquired an E28 535i which is my project car, and I've been having a lot of fun working on that too.
Country:
Australia
Model:
E28, E34, E46
About my car:
My main car is a 1992 BMW E34 M5. The E34 M5 is very rare here in Australia, only 44 were imported by BMW, although there are a few gray imports floating around as well. I have done a few mods to it, most recently was the addition of an Eisenmann rear muffler (check my vids to hear the sound), but I also have an EAT chip, S38B38 cam gears, a UUC short shift kit with DSSR rod, 370mm MTec II steering wheel, staggered OEM MParrallel wheels that have been polished and the centres painted. Suspension has been changed to Koni adjustable shocks and H&R springs all round.

My other car is an old E28 535i that was given to me for free, the guy was going to wreck it until I said I would take it. All in all, it was in pretty good condition all around, except for a large dent in the RHS rear door, the the whole car was covered in dirt and grime, inside and out. It took me weeks to get the insides clean again, and the stench of tobacco out of the fabrics, I've replaced the rear door now, and so next job is to paint it.

I've also just bought a black on black E46 318i for my wife. She doesn't have her license yet though, so she will have to learn to drive in it, which means it will be me doing most of the driving in it

ECCA Victorian Navigation Run

Hey all,

I'm a member of a local online car club called the European Car Club of Australia (ECCA), and on Sunday, I met up with some of the other members of ECCA for a "Nav Run". The concept is simple, the organiser sets a pre-determined route, and sets up a series of questions that need to be answered along the way. Directions are given just by the trip meter (ie. at 45.2 km, turn right), and street names are only used every now and then so that you can val… Continue

The ins and outs of using Quick Detailer (QD)

Quick detailers are often touted as a bit of a miracle product by their manufacturers, but they inevitably fall short of their claims. So perhaps we should start with the things that Quick Detailer (QD) is not good for.

Primarily, using a quick detailer is not a substitute for washing your car. Even if all you have on your car is a very light layer of dust, QD will simply grind that dust into your paint, trust me I’ve done it heaps of times, and I’ve regretted it afterwards every time.

Also, Q… Continue

Waxing your car

OK, let’s get one thing straight: Polishing is not waxing, and waxing is not polishing. They are 2 very different, separate and distinct processes, with different purposes. Polishing your paintwork is what gives you the shine, the reflections, the lustre. Most people that that’s what wax does, but it’s not true! Consider this: A lot of cars entered into concourse events do not use any wax at all, they present with a purely polished finish, as they feel they wax detracts from the ultimate clarity… Continue

How to clean your car's paint with a Clay Bar

Have you ever noticed that after you have washed your car, and you lightly rub your fingers over the paint, that it still feels rough and gritty? This is completely normal, and thankfully, it's also very easy to fix by "claying" your car. After doing so, your car's paint will feel smooth like glass, and best of all, it's so easy to do!

To clay your car, you need just 3 things:
1) A clay bar
2) Some clay lubricant (usually a quick detailer)
3) A microfibre cloth

You can usually stop by your loc… Continue

Polishing your car

OK, let’s get one thing straight: Polishing is not waxing, and waxing is not polishing. They are 2 very different, separate and distinct processes, with different purposes. Polishing your paintwork is what gives you the shine, the reflections, the lustre. It is without doubt the most complex part of the detailing process, because there are so many variables, different products, and different techniques.

There are 2 types of polish, chemical and abrasive. Chemical polishes are good if you don’t… Continue
