The ins and outs of using Quick Detailer (QD)

Quick detailers are often touted as a bit of a miracle product by their manufacturers, but they inevitably fall short of their claims. So perhaps we should start with the things that Quick Detailer (QD) is not good for.

Primarily, using a quick detailer is not a substitute for washing your car. Even if all you have on your car is a very light layer of dust, QD will simply grind that dust into your paint, trust me I’ve done it heaps of times, and I’ve regretted it afterwards every time.

Also, QD offers next to no protection to your paint, so it is no substitute for waxing either

So, what is it good for then? I use it for 3 main purposes

1) Keep some QD and a microfiber (MF) cloth in your car, and when a bird decides to leave you a calling card, you can remove it before it has the chance to etch into your paint. Good for other nasties too like tree sap etc. Sure, you will scratch the paint a little in the area that you clean, but it is 100 times easier to remove those scratches than it is to remove etchings left behind by bird droppings

2) Most (but not all) QDs work well as a clay lube, in fact if you buy a clay kit, it will most likely just come with a bottle of QD as the lube anyway

3) They are really good at adding a bit of gloss to a freshly washed car. I only wax my car every 6 to 8 weeks, but I wash it every week, so after every wash in-between waxes, I go over the car with my favourite QD, just to give the car a bit of extra pop. It takes about 10 mins and is well worth it to my eyes. My favourite QD for this purpose is Zaino Z8, it looks fantastic. It’s expensive, at about $50 per bottle, but I’ve had one bottle for about 18 months now, and I’ve only used half of it, it lasts for ages!

When I saw the title of this John, I thought you meant blokes who detail your car quickly. :)

We had a couple of blokes round to our office today, selling their on-site detailing services. Getting your car detailed while you're at work is quite a good idea - I like it when detailers come to you.

So I asked them how long it takes them to detail a car and they said "Fifteen minutes". No thanks!

No matter how many clever shortcuts people have, I can't imagine a car being properly detailed in quarter of an hour!
