MY MOTIV BMW

For BMW owners and enthusiasts

It has been a while now I've been trying to fix this hesitation and start-up problem but with little success. Therefore I thought I'll write something about what I've done so far and thinking of doing in the future and maybe You good people could add your thoughts from own experience. Here I go!

The Car: 320iA Coupe - 1993 - Single Vanos M50 engine with 165*** miles on the clock

Symptoms:

1: Very rough start-up in the morning, must hold the ignition for a long time untill engine starts. Sometimes the engine makes a normal turning sound and sometimes it sounds like there is someone in the engine trying to chizzle his way out! After the car is warmed up and I've been driving for at least 15 minutes, the ignition is not as bad, no strange noises but it still takes slightly longer than usual to start.

2: When accelerating hard from stand still or very low speed (5-10mph) it feels like the car is choking, hesitating. This happens only when I'm accelerating from below 1200 revs. Any sudden acceleration from higher revs or speeds the car shoots off like a rocket, no problems what so ever.

What I have done so far: (all of the following DIYs' were done over a years period)

1: Changed the Fuel pump, fuel filter and air filter - 10 months ago

2: Changed the Rocker cover gasket, plugs gasket and spark plugs (new castrol oil change) - 5 months ago

3: Changed the Timing belt, thermostat, thermostat housing and water pump (flushing the system of course) - 4 months ago

4: Drove 1600 miles to Sweden :), the petrol tank burst after 1100 miles from the top which meant I had to fill half a tank untill destination. When inspecting the car in garage, I noticed oil leak from differential!! So I changed the petrol tank and all three rubber seals in the diff. - 4 months ago

5: Changed oil and oil filter in sweden

6: Back in England - changed oil and filter once again - 3 months ago

7: Cleaned ICV, inlet manifold and all hoses connected to them. Noticed two melted rubber hoses, changed both. - 3 months ago

That's pretty much all I can remember.

Future DIYs' ........
When attending the German Night at Ace Cafe last Monday I met up with Sam of Mymotive and he was kind enough to diagnose the car with his diagnostics tool. Here is what we found;

Under the EGS - Electronic Transmission Control we found;
code 100 - Gear Monitoring - 90% sure I need to fill up trans oil.
code 105 - Load information (DKT - throttle position signal) - could be bad wire or broken wire or anamalous signal
code 16 - Stall Monitoring - this I dont know what it means.....any suggestions?

Under the DME - Digital Motor Electronics we found;
code 79 - this is another code that I could not find any information on, would appreciate any help on this one!

Other than filling up the transmission oil I was thinking of replacing;

MAF sensor
coils and/or
injectors

as these are most common fault with hesitation and ignition - unless you guys have a brilliant idea and could save me some money!! :)

Tomorrow, I'll start with inspecting my plugs and coils for cracks etc.

Please, feel free to add your views and opinions, I appreciate it!

Haha, EGR only exists on diesel engines! Doh!!!! :?
Antchi Comment by Antchi on November 25, 2009 at 2:04pm
Ok, I've been doing some reading now and apparently there is something calles EGR valve. This controlles the emissions allowed in to the inlet manifold to ease with cooling. If this valve is leaking, stuck open or doesnt open at all (in other words, FAULTY) then the car should show the above mentioned symptoms. I shall investigate further......:/

Well, just as I thought.....the bloody car is still playing up even with the new MAF!! Atleast I can get a refund....
I noticed another "symptom" today when testing the new maf (and later the old), when giving the car sudden and hard throttle from throttle wire in the engine....I noticed a "clonk" sound. Sometimes the sound was low and sometimes really scary loud! I checked all the spark plugs and boots (again) but all seems fine. By the way, the noise sounds like it came from under the inlet manifold. Any thoughts?

Haha, yeah I'll try that. I really hope it's the MAF that's playing up.....I'm getting really bored with this.....

Thanks!

Try disconnecting the battery and touch + and - terminals together.... leave it disconnected for 10 mins and reconnect again. See if that makes any difference.... if it doesn't then try emptying the ash trays.... you got to try everything right? ;-) hehe

Hopefully the MAF sensor will sort it out.... make sure you fit it before the filter just to test it out. Good luck!

Alright good people! I've now ordered a MAF sensor and it should be with me tomorrow (fingers crossed), I have also ordered K&N induction kit and that should reach me in 3 days. I noticed a weird thing with my car today, it was behaving in the complete opposite than the above described problem. It had a rough start in the morning but when I was picking my daughter up from school the car was staying above 1000 revs in N and just under in D and couldn't wait to shoot off as soon as I took my foot off the brake. The best word too decribe how she was would be Hyper! Anyone who knows why? Thanks

They do a quick turnaround.... you'd probably be without your car for 3 days max. Try Ebay for a MAF, its always a good starting point :-)
