Motor Racing in the 60s early 70s
We were on the south bank, with our car; good job, as although a sunny day, it was freezing, but that did not put me off at all.
Skipping loads and taking you to 1968, Dad would always write a letter to my Junior school, explaining I had some sort of virus and that meant I could go to wherever, in this instance Silverstone, both on the Thursday and Friday for the practice sessions, then for the race, which in this case was on a Saturday. It was The Daily Express trophy at Silvestone. Back then, the GP circus hit these shores 3 or 4 times for GP car action. March saw the brand new cars for the coming year at Brands Hatch, April, Silverstone as above, July the GP, also at one time the GP cars raced at Oulton Park and Goodwood. The GP stars of the day all used to race in F2, Le mans and saloon racing, welll some of them.
I remember Silverstone 68; would have been the Thursday or the Friday, a practice day. Practice days seating was free, as well as entry into the paddocks where you scoured round to get your autograph book signed. I remember seeing Jackie Stewart, Graham Hill, Chris Amon and Jack Brabham talking away together; I nervously pushed the cover of the race programme and biro into Jackie's hands, he signed and to my amazement passed the book around all the Drivers in conversation. You must realise these guys were like Gods to me and I was scared I would do something that would annoy them, they were great especially Jackie, a true Gent.
The Pits at Silverstone in the mid 60s used to have standing space above them for spectators. Not a good spot for race days, no such thing as tyre and fuel stops, but great practice days, if you owned a stop watch. It was always busy and I had a job seeing anything . To my left there was a boy probably 2 or 3 years my Junior dressed in racing drivers overalls, with what was the Firestone tyre companies freebies for the teams, you couldn't even buy them, as well as the overalls. It turned out the boy in question was Damon Hill. The freebie was like a submarines telescope where you could view things normally out of your height range. That meant nothing but the GP overalls for kids, why didnt I ask Damon, where did you get them from? One cool dude, even as an 8 year old
It transpired in later years, Damon's School in Hertfordshire played our school at Rugby, Hockey and cricket. I never made the team but Damon was a bit too young for all that then, anyhow.
Just like myself, Damon liked music and played guitar. Maybe if we had of spoken above the pits in 1968, the history books may have had to rewrite themselves re the world of rock and roll. The first GP world Champion to sell out Wembley Stadium, fronting the greatest band in the world.
